The Centre for Canadian Studies at the University of Vienna was established in January of 1998 as a project of the Centre for International and Interdisciplinary Studies (ZIIS), whereby a platform for interdisciplinary cooperation of research and academic teaching was created.
The Centre for Canadian Studies coordinates multifaceted initiatives of teaching and research work taking place predominantly at the University of Vienna with a focus on Canada and takes upon itself the organization and financing of interdisciplinary programs furthering Canadian Studies research (in particular lecture series, presentations, symposia, and study tours).

The Centre for Canadian Studies also strives to maintain connections with other Canadian Studies programmes and institutions with similar goals throughout Europe and America.
