Mel’s Drive-In stands at the centre of things. The kids

call it Burger City, and at dusk their cars begin to fill

the parking spaces, radiating like spokes from beneath

the neon-lit canopy where carhops on roller skates

carry the orders – burgers, french fries, cherry

Cokes – on trays that fit over open window frames.

Everyone shows up at Burger City, but nobody stays. There are dates to be made, there will be a drag race

to watch, there is the street to

drive – the main street, where the cars cruise up and down and greetings, insults and passengers are exchanged.
