The relationship between women and the comics industry is contested perhaps now more than ever before. Fresh conflicts in mainstream presses reveal lingering aversions to women creators, and fan-reactions to reboots demonstrate similar dis-ease with „non-canonical“ re-imaginings of female characters. Far from being novel, these tensions are rooted in the very history of western comics. From the Golden Age, women were erased or marginalized in comics through, for instance, the use of „gender-neutral“ monikers. Female characters were aesthetically constructed to meet and satisfy the male gaze and overwhelmingly, their narratives were penned by male authors.

Women readers of comics were historically „pandered to“ with romance comics but were otherwise ignored as a target audience. Even within the medium of graphic novels, where women’s work has arguably been more visible, women creators are being erased by industry-standard events like the Angoulême Festival. Here, as in other areas of popular culture, women are treated in very Aristotelian ways—at best, they are deemed to be monstrous derivatives of men, and at worst, they are Continue reading

Common to older attempts at constructing an emotionology and recent attempts to conceive of emotions as practices is their tendency to overemphasize successful emotions. While people often expect or desire to experience a particular emotion in a particular situation, sometimes the emotions just don’t appear or don’t last for very long. Emotions must be practiced, but these practices often fail. The conference inquires into the concrete historical and social circumstances that condition this failure to feel. Against this background, participants will also discuss the successful production of emotions, the role of certain institutions, discursive frames, competing norms, significant others, and divergent expectations, as well as the bearing of conflicts and situative factors. From this perspective, the failure to feel says something about the possibilities of successful feeling, and thus says something about the historicity of emotions.

The conference will deal with four distinct fields where this failing at feelings can be observed, and will focus on European and North American history during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: Read more … (Web)

In recent research the decades between the 1970s and the 1990s are interpreted as a time of revolutionary change triggered by economic crises, in which the parameters and conditions for our present times were set. Conservatism looms large in this quite influential narrative; after all, the Reagan and Thatcher governments in the US and in Britain implemented economic and social policies that fundamentally changed the welfare state economies of the boom years. Conservatism is therefore often interpreted as neoliberalism in conservative guise, as the defining political ideology of finance capitalism.

However, conservatism was a much more diverse phenomenon than these interpretations suggest. While economics and politics were certainly crucial in the fashioning of a new conservatism in Western Europe and the US, conservatism was also a diverse cultural phenomenon, which is not adequately reflected in historical research to date. The conference seeks to fill this historiographical gap by questioning the primacy of economics and debating alternative interpretations of this age of change. Read more and source … (Web)

Although numerous women have run for President of the United States, in 2016 Hillary Clinton will be the first female, and first feminist, candidate to top the ticket of a major party. Although this moment has been anticipated since 1964, when Republican Margaret Chase Smith announced her candidacy, and Clinton herself made a strong run at the nomination in 2008, November 2016’s election will be the closest any woman has been to becoming President of the United States. The organizers want to pause here and ask: what is the meaning of this moment in the longer history of women in US-American political life?

Women began to run for office, successfully and unsuccessfully, prior to passage of the 19th Amendment. Perhaps the best known is Victoria Woodhull, a candidate for President from the Equal Rights Party in 1872; while Republican Jeannette Rankin became the first woman to hold a national office when she was elected to Congress from the state of Montana in 1916. Yet, women’s politics have historically extended beyond the ticket to international, inter-party, cross-racial, and cross class collaborations. These forms of activism, political brokering and cooperation extend the meaning of politics well beyond the partisan deal-making, Continue reading
