Am 24. und 25.04.2008 würdigte ein Symposion des Wiener Instituts für Wissenschaft und Kunst gesellschaftlich und literarisch engagierte jüdische Frauen in Prag zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts. 

„Einen weiblichen Prager Kreis hat es nie gegeben.“ Diese provokative These von Wilma A. Iggers stand am Beginn eines Symposions des Instituts für Wissenschaft und Kunst in Wien. Sie versuchte damit eine erste Antwort auf die Frage, die der Veranstaltung ihren Titel gab. Kooperationspartner und Gastgeber war das Tschechische Zentrum in der Wiener Herrengasse 17, das am 24. und 25.04.2008 rund 70 Gäste begrüßen durfte, die meisten von ihnen aus Österreich, Deutschland und Tschechien. Eingebunden war das von Susanne Blumesberger und Rahel Rosa Neubauer initiierte und organisierte Symposion in die Projektinitiative biografiA, die sich seit zehn Jahren um die umfassende historisch-biografische Aufarbeitung österreichischer Frauenpersönlichkeiten bemüht.

Wilma A. Iggers, die 1921 in Westböhmen geborene Grande Dame der Prag- und Böhmenforschung, bezog sich in ihrem Eröffnungsreferat auf den von Max Brod geprägten Begriff des „Prager Kreises“; er umfasste eine fest umrissene Gruppe von Autoren. Brod unterschied einen engeren Prager Kreis, dem außer seiner Person noch Franz Kafka, Ludwig Winder, Felix Weltsch und Oskar Baum angehörten, und einen weiteren Prager Kreis, der jene Gruppen und Personen einschloss, mit denen der engere Kreis in Beziehung stand (wie Werfel, Meyrink, Rilke oder der zionistische Zirkel um Hugo Bergmann). In diesen weiten oder engen Kreisen spielten Frauen zwar eine Rolle als Quelle der Inspiration, als Objekt der Sehnsucht, auch als Ehefrauen, Geliebte oder Schwestern. Als Autorinnen mit eigenem künstlerischem Profil traten sie jedoch nicht hervor. Iggers sah eine Ursache in der Rolle, die das konservative Prager deutsche Milieu den Frauen aufzwang und sie darauf festlegte, Französisch, Handarbeiten und Kochen zu lernen und mit Zwanzig zu heiraten. Intellektuelle Frauen fanden sich zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts nach Iggers’ Beobachtung eher im tschechischsprachigen Prag, etwa die couragierte Journalistin Milena Jesenská, die heute vielen nur noch als Freundin Franz Kafkas bekannt ist. So kam es auch, dass Prager deutsche Frauen mit künstlerischen oder intellektuellen Ambitionen, wie Auguste Hauschner oder Grete Fischer, oft schon sehr jung nach Berlin auswanderten.

Der Prager Kreis war nicht weiblich, konstatierte auch Rahel Rosa Neubauer in ihrer Begrüßungsrede. Dass man auch über die Abwesenheit eines Phänomens eine kontroverse und erhellende Diskussion führen kann, zeigte sich im Verlauf des Symposions. Vorausgesetzt natürlich, man hinterfragt die Methoden und Definitionen, die unsere landläufigen literaturhistorischen Kategorien prägen. Das Symposion verfolgte hier drei Strategien. Zunächst suchte es den Kultur- und Literaturbegriff zu erweitern, indem es den Fokus weg von der reinen schriftstellerischen Produktion und hin zur Schaffung und Pflege kultureller Netzwerke lenkte. In diesem Sinne nämlich war eine Vielzahl deutschsprachiger jüdischer Frauen in Prag gesellschaftlich aktiv; am bekanntesten geworden ist wohl der Salon der Berta Fanta (1865–1918), in dem unter anderem Franz Kafka und Albert Einstein verkehrten.

Als Auftakt der ersten Sektion zeichnete Hartmut Binder (Ditzingen bei Stuttgart) die Geschichte des 1906 gegründeten Vereins „Klub deutscher Künstlerinnen“ in Prag nach. Von der ersten Idee – einen geschützten Raum zu schaffen, in dem Frauen unbehelligt rauchen, Kaffee trinken und Billard spielen konnten – führte die Entwicklung hin zu einem „Zentrum der Förderung und Anregung für Künstlerinnen“, das neben der Geselligkeit auch der Fortbildung und der Kunstverwertung diente. Für gediegene Inhalte sorgten Frauen wie die erste Präsidentin Hedda Sauer, die nicht nur Gattin des bekannten Prager Germanistikprofessors war, sondern auch selbst als Lyrikerin und Erzählerin hervortrat. Die materielle Basis sicherten potente Sponsoren wie die Böhmische Sparkasse oder das Prager Deutsche Theater. Einen Kontakt zu gleichartigen tschechischen Vereinen gab es nicht, vielmehr sollte eine Kunstausübung ohne die Störung des „nationalen Gegners“ garantiert werden. Eine weitergehende politische Positionierung wurde strikt vermieden.

Im seinem Referat Vertuschte Tribünen: Veranstaltungen von „Frauenfortschritt“ und „Künstlerinnenklub“ als Plattformen von Frauen in der Prager Zwischenkriegszeit fragte Stefan Benedik Karner (Graz) nach den Ursachen für die beharrliche Nichtwahrnehmung weiblicher Aktivitäten durch die Geschichtsschreibung. Er unternahm dafür einen methodologischen Exkurs zu den Narrativen der Literaturhistorie, die Frauengeschichte stets über den Umweg der Männergeschichte erzählt, also Frauen über ihre Männer, Väter oder Brüder definiert oder sich – etwa wenn es um die Shoa geht – auf weiblich-jüdische Opferstereotype beschränkt. Schon ein Blick in die Veranstaltungsprotokolle der beiden Prager Frauenvereine würde die Forschung eines Besseren belehren, gab Karner zu bedenken; so habe etwa der Auftritt der Kernphysikerin Lise Meitner alle männlichen Referenten den Schatten gestellt. Dabei sahen sich die Vereinsaktivistinnen nicht in erster Linie als Frauenrechtlerinnen, sondern als Trägerinnen einer deutschen Nationalkultur.

Der Prager „Klub jüdischer Frauen und Mädchen“, den Rahel Rosa Neubauer (Wien) in ihrem Referat vorstellte, hatte sich andere Ziele gesetzt, organisierten sich hier doch die Töchter der ersten Prager Zionist/innen. Wandten sich „Frauenfortschritt“ und „Künstlerinnenklub“ an Frauen der deutschsprachigen Ober- und Mittelschicht – unabhängig von ihrer Konfession –, so hatte sich der „Mädchenklub“ dem Hauptziel des Prager Zionismus verschrieben: einer Erziehung der jüdischen Jugend zum bewussten Judentum, die dem in Prag allgegenwärtigen Assimilierungstrend entgegensteuern wollte. Darüber hinaus bot der Klub den damals noch unbekannten Autoren des Prager Kreises ein wichtiges Forum. Klassenschranken spielten dabei keine Rolle, an den Vereinsabenden, bei den zionistischen Seminaren und während der Hebräischkurse saßen Fabrikantengattinnen neben Arbeiterinnen und Studentinnen. Für Aufsehen sorgte der „Klub jüdischer Frauen und Mädchen“ auch dadurch, dass eine Frau aus seinen Reihen schon 1913 nach Erez Israel auswanderte – als erstes Mitglied der Prager jüdischen Gemeinde überhaupt.

Ein weiteres, bisher von der Literaturgeschichte kaum beleuchtetes Betätigungsfeld für literarisch ambitionierte Pragerinnen waren die speziell an Frauen gerichteten Zeitungs- und Zeitschriftenbeilagen. Zwei Beispiele für dieses journalistische Genre wurden in der nächsten Sektion des Symposions näher betrachtet. Zunächst gab Anthony Northey (Wolfville, Kanada) einen Überblick zur Geschichte der „Prager Frauen-Zeitung“; sie erschien in den Jahre 1905 bis 1918 als Beilage der Deutschen Zeitung Bohemia, die neben dem Prager Tagblatt die meistgelesene Tageszeitung des Prager deutschsprachigen Bürgertums war. Zum einen richtete sich diese Beilage an die Ehefrau aus der wohlsituierten Mittelschicht in ihrer Rolle als Hausfrau und „Zierde des Salons“ – vier der insgesamt acht Seiten jeder Ausgabe waren für häusliche Themen wie Kindererziehung oder Kochrezepte reserviert – zum anderen verstand sie sich auch als Vorkämpferin für die Rechte der „neuen Frau“, die studierte oder berufstätig war und den Anschluss an die internationale Frauenbewegung suchte. Auch die Technikbegeisterung teilte die Prager Frauen-Zeitung mit ihren Leserinnen, sie berichtete über die Entwicklung der Aeroplane und gab „Empfehlungen für die Automobilkleidung der Frau von Welt“. Zur Unterhaltung bot das Blatt „mondäne Belletristik“, meist Novellen zeitgenössischer Schriftsteller wie Egon Erwin Kisch oder Oskar Baum, aber auch Texte von Autorinnen wie Hedda Sauer, Emma Rosenfeld und Marie Stona.

Die didaktische Beilage „Für unsere Frauen“, die 1910/11 einmal monatlich mit der zionistischen Wochenschrift „Selbstwehr“ erschien, stand im Mittelpunkt des Referates von Bernd Kühne (Sulz am Neckar). Zielgruppe waren die jüdischen Frauen und Mütter; mit Negativdarstellungen der assimilierten Juden suchte die Herausgeberin Ida Barber der „Zeitkrankheit Taufseuche“ entgegenzutreten. Babette Frieds in der Selbstwehr erschienene Ghettoerzählung Aus dem Assanierungsgebiete verfolgte ähnliche Ziele, indem sie neben dem Schmutz und der Armut der Judenstadt auch den inneren Reichtum jüdischen Lebens zeigte. Weitaus entschiedener als die Prager Frauen-Zeitung propagierte die Beilage Für unsere Frauen die Ehe bürgerlichen Zuschnitts und die Aufopferung der Frau für die Familie; die Frau könne zwar, so Barber, durchaus in die „Armee des Wissens“ eintreten, solle sich dabei aber auf Themen wie „Küchenchemie“ oder Gesundheitserziehung beschränken. Auch die Erzählungen Ida Barbers, die neben ihrer redaktionellen Tätigkeit selbst schrieb, zielten auf die Eingliederung der Protagonistinnen in eine intakte bürgerliche Welt.

Die dritte Sektion des Symposions war der Würdigung einzelner exemplarischer Persönlichkeiten gewidmet. Zunächst ging Ekkehard W. Haring (Wien/Dresden) in seinem Referat Kafkas Schwester Ottilie – eine Prager Assimilantin oder Zionistin par excellence? auf die Rolle der Ottla Kafka (1892–1943) als virtuelle Ko-Autorin des Kafkaschen Oeuvres ein. Sie schuf für ihren Bruder nicht nur die äußeren Voraussetzungen für ungestörtes Schreiben, indem sie seinen Rückzug aus der belastendend Familienkonstellation organisierte und unterstützte; vielmehr waren die Gespräche mit der „unverbildeten Leserin“ für Kafka Anregung und Korrektiv zugleich. Doch warnte Haring davor, Ottla auf ihre Funktion als Kafkas Schwester zu reduzieren, und hob statt dessen ihre Renitenz gegen die Tyrannei des Vaters und gegen den herrschenden Zeitgeist mit seinen Entscheidungszwängen hervor: Einerseits rebellierte Ottla gegen die in jüdischen Kreisen übliche Heiratsvermittlung und heiratete einen christlichen Tschechen, andererseits bewirtschaftete sie – angeregt durch die zionistische Forderung nach der Heranführung jüdischer Großstädter an das Landleben – einen Hof in Zürau und schloss gegen den Widerstand ihres Vaters eine Landwirtschaftsausbildung erfolgreich ab. So spiegeln sich ihrer Person und ihrem Schicksal die Konflikte ihrer Generation zwischen persönlichem Glücksanspruch, Assimilationsstreben und Suche nach Anschluss an eine neue jüdische Gemeinschaft.

Mit einer zweiten Frauengestalt, deren Name meist nur noch im Zusammenhang mit dem eines Mannes genannt wird, befasste sich Jörg Thunecke (Köln) in seinem Vortrag Die Prager Lyrik Gertrude Urzidils. Gertrude Urzidil (1898–1977), Tochter eines Rabbiners und Schwester des Religionsphilosophen Friedrich Thieberger, studierte als eine der ersten Frauen an der Prager Karlsuniversität und lernte ihren späteren Ehemann Johannes Urzidil im Café Arco, dem legendären Treffpunkt des „Prager Kreises“, kennen. In den Prager Jahren verfasste sie Naturlyrik im Stil der Neuen Sachlichkeit und beschrieb die positiven Aspekte des Landlebens; Prag wird in diesen Texten kaum thematisiert. Thunecke hob die vom Herzen kommende „weibliche“ Ästhetik des Besonderen hervor, die diese Gedichte auszeichnet. Er äußerte aber auch die These, erst das Exil habe die Lyrik der Autorin zur Vollendung gebracht. 1939 waren die Urzidils emigriert, sie lebten zunächst in England und später in New York. Gertrude sicherte den Lebensunterhalt des Paares anfänglich durch Babysitterdienste und schrieb kleinere Texte für Zeitschriften, Zeitungen und Anthologien, mit denen sie aber nicht aus dem Schatten ihres zunehmend erfolgreichen Mannes treten konnte.

Mehr Raum zur Entfaltung ihrer Talente war der Autorin vergönnt, der sich Hella-Sabrina Lange (Neuss) in ihrem Referat „Zeitlebens Prag verbunden“ – Die Schriftstellerin Auguste Hauschner als kulturelle Mittlerin widmete. Hauschner (1850–1924) hatte Prag schon 1871 an der Seite eines vermögenden Industriellen in Richtung Berlin verlassen, blieb aber in engem Kontakt mit der Prager Kunst- und Literaturszene. Trotz eines recht umfangreichen Lebenswerkes – zu mehr als 15 Romanen und Novellen kommen zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen in namhaften Zeitschriften wie Simplicissimus oder Das Literarische Echo – teilt Hauschner mit Ottla Kafka und Gertrude Urzidil das Schicksal, von der Wissenschaft lediglich in ihrem Bezug auf die männlichen Protagonisten der Kulturgeschichte wahrgenommen zu werden. Bekannt ist sie heute vor allem als Cousine des Sprachphilosophen Fritz Mauthner, als die „betuchte Dame“ aus Brods Autobiografie, der damit auf ihr Wirken als Mäzenin anspielt, und als Mittelpunkt eines literarischen Salons, in dem Martin Buber, Romain Rolland oder Max Liebermann verkehrten. Lange lud in ihrem Referat zu einer Beschäftigung mit dem literarischen Schaffens Hauschners ein, indem sie auf dessen Reichtum an historischen und zeittypischen Themen verwies. So entwirft die Autorin in ihren Romanen Die Familie Lowositz und Rudolf und Camilla ein differenziertes Bild des zeitgenössischen Prag mit seinem spannungsreichen Miteinander von deutsch- und tschechischsprachigen Juden und Christen, während ihre Novelle Der Tod des Löwen an die Blütezeit des jüdischen Prag um die Wende vom 16. zum 17. Jahrhundert erinnert.

Aller gute Wille der Leserschaft ist hinfällig, wenn es am Zugang zu den Texten fehlt; auch über die Editionspolitik kann Literaturgeschichte geschrieben werden. Besondere Verdienste hat hier Christoph Haacker erworben, der Gründer und Leiter des Wuppertaler Arco Verlags, der den von Dieter Sudhoff herausgegebenen Band Holunderblüten. Erzählungen deutscher Schriftstellerinnen aus Böhmen und Mähren publizierte. In einer mitreißenden Lesung brachte Haacker zum Abschluss des Symposions Texte von Auguste Hauschner, Grete Fischer und Grete Meisel-Hess zu Gehör und sorgte damit für einen stimmigen Ausklang.

Einen weiblichen „Prager Kreis“ à la Max Brod hat es tatsächlich nicht gegeben, diese Erkenntnis konnte das Publikum als Fazit mit nach Hause nehmen. Wohl aber haben engagierte Frauen in Prag ihre Kreise gezogen, deren (Wieder-)Entdeckung sich lohnt.
