In 1910 approximately 60% of Swedish immigrant women were employed as house workers and servants in the United States, but was this high figure an indication that Swedish immigrants were culturally inclined to take this type of work or is the explanation to be found in the structural discrimination on the American labor market? Interpretations have differed. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss what three American sources can tell us about housework during the age of mass migration with a special emphasis on ethnicity and immigrant women.
