Positivismus.Macht.Aufklärung
Politicization of the scientific worldview
Austrian Academy of Sciences
Clubraum
Dr. Ignaz Seipel-Platz 2
1010 Vienna
The aim of the workshop "Positivismus.Macht.Aufklärung" is to reconsider positivism as a European and international movement taking on multifarious forms and spanning science, politics and society. We seek a comprehensive international overview of the spread of positivistic worldview(s) in the longue durée, debating its cultural and scientific basis, as well as its use as a narrative argument in various conflict situations. Three aspects are of special interest: first, the non-simultaneity of the spread of positivist ideas; secondly, the context-dependent political functionalization of the scientific worldview; thirdly, the international and interdisciplinary networks connecting proponents of that worldview.
The workshop is not intended to pursue the systematic reconstruction of a positivistic worldview or the interpretation of scholarly works, but, rather, to produce a cartography of positivistic topoi along the borders between political, scientific and cultural fields.
