7. Information for Data provider

- Guide Line

7.1. What to do first ...

  • 1. Find out if for your service, results are already available
click here   (A new window will open.)
Then you can select your service, a parameter and a year.

  • 2. You will need a user name and a password.
Please contact us for them via email ( inga.groehn@univie.ac.at).

    7.2. Your benefits ...

With the help of the mouse pointer you can select one station from the map ...
    ... of your service (+),
    ... of "GTS-provider" (+) and
... of an unknown provider (+)
and have a look at the time-series-plot and the table with its characteristics.
(A more detailed description how to interpret the results you find at the 3. Interpretation and Examples" - see left side.)

You also find a summary (tables) of all your stations (HTML or EXCEL), also of these stations which are not in the map area.

We hope that with these informations you have a quick overview about your stations to find out where errors have occured or to detect unintentional sistematic bias. If you have any problem or suggestions how to improve our aim, please do not hesitate to write us an Email. ( inga.groehn@univie.ac.at)

    7.3. What's new: SOP-station net facing GTS-station net

    1. There are non-GTS stations added: If you are a provider with both station types: Please have a look at the summary station table. In some cases non-GTS and GTS station lays on the same place. Please check this. Only one station can be checked at a time step.

    2. Completely new is the "limit-check": One essential assumption of our method is that the number of gross errors is small compared to the total number of observation (Compare "2. Method" - left side). But it might happen that there is high density of wrong data in a small area due to e.g. transmitting problems. To avoid a wrong interpretation, the minimum (dark blue in the following figures) and the maximum (dark green in the following figures) value from the GTS data in the MAP area was determined:

    Sea Surface Pressure:
    to amplify the figure

    Potential Temperature:
    to amplify the figure

    Humidity:
    to amplify the figure

Then every value from the SOP was compared with these extreme values. If a value is outside this range plus a permitted variation (light blue, light green) the value was flagged and not used for the check.
The idea is to make this list available on MAP internet pages.

    3. There are also differences between the SOP+GTS and GTS results due to the different scale resolved by the different observational networks.

On the following figure you can find some examples for potential temperature (presented at the MAP meeting in Park City, 2002).
