An electronic city map
of Vienna
If you want to find a certain address
in Vienna, there is an electronic
city map (new version) (or
old version) available on a server run by the city of Vienna. Just enter the
street name in the first (larger) box and the number in the second (smaller)
box, then click on the grey/red box "Start" (or "Suchen" if you
use the old version of the electronic city map).
The older version of the server is frequently overloaded, so try the new version
first. However, the new version does not include information on tram and bus
lines automatically. So after you get your first electronically generated map,
you have to mark the little box "Öffentliche Verkehrsmittel" (you
find it on the bottom part of the page) as "on" and then click on the
red box "Neu zeichnen" to get info on buses (blue) and trams (red).
Some information on Public Transport
Public transport in Vienna is very
well developed and one of the good things about the city. One of the cheapest
possibilities is buying an "8-day-pass" which costs ATS 300,- (around
20 US dollars), so this is around ATS 38,- per day (around 2 US dollars 50 cents).
The pass is also called "Unweltstreifenticket" or "green
ticket", as its colour is green. It is a multi-ride ticket consisting of 8
stripes. You simply validate one of the stripes the first time you use public
transport on a day by stamping the stripe e.g. in the tram or bus. The ticket is
valid for the whole day of validation.
In addition there are also weekly
passes (price around ATS 155,-), monthly passes (price around ATS 560,-) or
yearly passes (price around ATS 5200,-). Students can obtain a "semester
ticket" (valid from october to january or from march to june) for ATS
2120,-
The shortest
distance & the fastest way by public transport: How long does it take to go
to ... from the "House Doebling"?
You can use the server named
above to find out the fastest way by public transport or the shortest distance
from one place in Vienna to another:
For instance, if you want to know the fastest way from the "House Doebling"
to another place of your interest (e.g. your university, working place etc.), klick
here (route by public transport) and enter "gymnasiumstr" and
"85" into the first two boxes ("Startadresse" = the address
of the "House Doebling"). Then enter the street name and number of the
address you want to go to in the other two boxes ("Zieladresse") and
klick "Route suchen" to see the result. You will receive information
on the fastest way by public transport to your address of interest, including
information which kind of tram, bus or underground you have to use, where you
have to change or get off etc., the total time including how long you have to
walk and finally a city map showing the destination.
You can also search for the shortest
distance between two places in Vienna. This will be interesting for you e.g.
if you have an own car.
Unfortunately, the server run by the city of Vienna is frequently busy. However,
there is another possibility to find your route on a server run by the
public
transport company of the city of Vienna. The respective form is somewhat more complicated to fill in: First, klick on the word "Go" close to the two words "Wien". A form pops up. Then uncheck/deselect the two boxes called
"Haltestelle" and choose "Straße/Hausnummer" instead. Then, you
can enter "Gymnasiumstr. 85" in the upper free field ("Start") and the street name and number of your address of
interest in the lower field ("Ziel" means "destination"). You can select the time ("Uhr") and the date (day.month.year) e.g. when you would like to find out if there is public transport in the late evening. Finally click on "anfordern" to start the search. You get the exact times and number of buses trams etc. including where you have
to get off, change the tram/bus etc.
