Björn Winkler, born in 1962, received his diplom degree in mineralogy with Klaus Langer as supervisor at the Technical University of Berlin in 1988. Then he went to the University of Cambridge and obtained his Ph.D. in 1991 with the thesis "Static and dynamic models of mineral energetics" which was supervised by E. Salje and M.T. Dove. After his time at Cambridge, Björn Winkler spent one and a half year at the Laboratoire Leon-Brillouin, Saclay, in France working on modem methods of neutron scattering. Since 1993 he is at the University of Kiel where he qualified as university lecturer with the thesis "Neutron spectroscopic and theoretical studies on minerals of tri-chlor-germanates" and holds a permanent staff position.
Bjöm Winkler is author and coauthor of more than 40 publications in prestigious international journals. In his crystallographical and mineralogical studies he uses neutron scattering, X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic methods. One of his favourite topics is the study of the dynamics of molecular water in minerals. Special recognition received his work on computational mineralogy. Björn Winkler receives the EMU medal of excellence for his outstanding contributions to the mineral sciences by his detailed studies of crystal structures and by the promotion of computational mineralogy in Europe. |
