Raman spectroscopy and imaging: Applications in the Earth sciences

Pre-conference short course (no. WSC1) in the framework of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) General Assembly
 

The two-day short course will give an introduction to Raman spectroscopy. This will include the theoretical basics, practical training in the use of state-of-the-art spectrometers, introduction to data reduction and interpretation, and an overview of applications in various fields of the Earth sciences. Obtaining both high-resolution point analyses and Raman-based images will be discussed and demonstrated. A number of current-day applications in the Earth sciences will be presented in more detail through invited talks by experts in the field.
The short course aims at putting participants in the position to apply Raman spectroscopy in their own research. For the laboratory training, participants are encouraged to bring own samples for analysis. Also, participants may want to bring their own mineral spectra that they were not able to identify. The course instructors will have two comprehensive, up-to-date mineral spectra libraries available for identification purposes.

Course fee: EUR 60.00 for IMA 2010 participants; EUR 80.00 for those who do not attend the IMA 2010 conference. The course fee includes refreshments and the short course dinner on Friday evening.

Registration:  Attendees of the IMA 2010 who would like to participate in the pre-conference short course WSC1 are asked to register via the registration pages under http://www.ima2010.hu/ (contacting the course organisers is not needed). Note that the short course is also open to interested people who do not plan to attend the IMA 2010.
These colleagues are asked to pre-register by sending a short e-mail (stating name and affiliation) to mineralogie@univie.ac.at. There is no registration deadline.
However, participation is based on a first-come-first-serve basis; registration will not be possible anymore as soon as the limit of 24 participants is filled.

Accomodation: Participants are advised to book online, for instance using http://www.wien.info/wtv/book-e.html. As the public transport system in Vienna is excellent and not costly, there is no need to limit the search to hotels close to the short course venue; any hotel near a subway station will be fine.
