Generally speaking, spectral decomposition of electromagnetic radiation can be done in two ways. If the system employs monochromators (mostly diffraction or holographic gratings) it is called dispersive, which means the spectrum is recorded by scanning through the wavelengths by a mechanical rotation of the monochromator(s). To improve spectral resolution, two or three consequent monochromators may be used instead of just one; the major drawback of such systems is decreased light throughput. The second way of spectral decomposition is the so-called Fourier transform (FT) method, where an interferometer is used to record an interferogram and the spectrum is produced by its Fourier transform. Most Raman systems work in dispersive mode, while the standard in IR absorption spectroscopy is the FT method (therefore it is not specified in the list below).
