What is u:net?

u:net is a brand name for the Internet services provided by the Vienna University Computer Center for the students at the University of Vienna. These services include a free e-mail address, web space, use of public computer facilities, and much more. u:net accounts are also being used for authentication, e.g. for querying examination results.

What do I need to use the u:net services?

You need a valid account (UserID and password). In order to create an account, the following data are required:

• Matrikelnummer (student ID): The "Matrikelnummer" is a seven-digit number, e.g. 0412345. The two leading digits stand for the current year, e.g. 04 for an ID created in 2004.
• Password from your advance reservation: It is also used for authentication purposes: You need it to create your u:net account.

What is my UserID and password?

Your UserID is the small letter a, followed by your "Matrikelnummer" including all leading zeroes, e.g. a0412345.

You choose your own password. It has to be at least five and at most eight characters long. Please don't give away your password to anybody else, you will be responsible for any eventual misuse. Choose a password that is not too easy to guess (don't use names or dictionary words, use numeric digits and mixed upper/lower case), and be sure to change your password from time to time.

How do I get my u:net account?

Just register by filling in the form. Don't forget to confirm that you agree to abide by the rules and regulations ("Benutzungsordnung").

When can I use the u:net services?

More or less immediately after registering. It takes a few minutes until the various services can be used.

What is my e-mail address?

It is UserID@unet.univie.ac.at, e.g. a0412345@unet.univie.ac.at. Please read your e-mails regularly, otherwise you might miss important information. You may use any mail client or Webmail. You may also forward your mail to some other address. If you get a lot of unsolicited junk mail, it is recommended to activate the spam filter.

Where can I publish my personal homepage?

Use your favourite SSH or SFTP client to transfer your homepage to the host login.unet.univie.ac.at. Store the files in the subdirectory html. The main page should be called index.html or index.htm. The URL of your homepage is http://www.unet.univie.ac.at/~User ID/, e.g. http://www.unet.univie.ac.at/~a0412345/. If you wish, you may publish your e-mail address and your URL in the Unet directory.

How long is my u:net account valid?

Your u:net account ist valid as long as you study at Vienna University.
