From October 1, 2012, the Institute for History of the Faculty of
Humanities of Leiden University has available a full-time PhD
position for 4 years in the NWO VICI project ‘Connecting in Times of
Duress: Understanding Communication and Conflict in Middle Africa’s
Mobile Margins’, section General History.
This interdisciplinary research programme seeks to understand the
dynamics in the relationship between social media, mobile telephony
and the social fabric under duress in Central Africa. The title of
this sub project is: ‘The (Wireless) Art of Navigating Duress’:
Being (dis)Connected during War(s): Shaping Urbanity in Chad and
Central African Republic.
This project includes a longer stay in the region of research.
The PhD candidate will develop this research that is
interdisciplinary (history, anthropology, communication), and
concentrates on situations in Chad and the Central African Republic.
The team will collaborate with researchers based in African
universities.

The section General History is a dynamic research group with
enthusiastic researchers and lecturers with a very good track record
in attracting national and international research grants. The
project will also be collaborating with the African Studies Centre
in Leiden.
Supervisor: Dr. Mirjam de Bruijn, (Professor of the Study of Modern
Africa).
Tasks:
writing of a PhD dissertation, in English or French; submitting
research results for publication in international peer-reviewed
academic journals; presenting papers at (international) conferences;
co-organizing conferences and workshops; teaching undergraduate
course(s) on African history and anthropology, normally in the
second and/or third year of the appointment.
Requirements: a Masters or equivalent degree in a relevant field
(e.g. Modern History, Social History, Anthropology, Media Studies,
African Studies); fluency in English and French (spoken and
written); ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
We offer: The position of PhD student is four years.
Initially the employee will be contracted for one year.
An extension of three years is possible after positive evaluation of
capabilities and compatibility.
Remuneration for a full working week will be € 2.042,- gross per
calendar month in the first year, increasing to a maximum of €
2.612,- gross per calendar month in the fourth year and is in
accordance with the current pay scales as indicated in the “CAO
Nederlandse Universiteiten”. An appointment with Leiden University
includes a pension build-up and facilitates other benefits such as
an annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year premium of 8.3%.

This project includes a longer stay in the region of research.
The postdoctoral researcher will develop his/her own research within
the project and will be part of the coordination. The research is
historical-anthropological, film and photography is part of the
methodology, and covers the Middle African region. The team
will collaborate with researchers based in African universities.

Tasks: independent historical-anthropological research leading to a
monograph; submitting research results for publication in
international peer-reviewed academic journals; presenting papers at
(international) conferences; coordination of the project (including
organization of conferences, financial assistance, assistance in the
supervision of PhD research); development of website; teaching in BA
and MA courses.
Requirements: a PhD in Humanities or Social Sciences;
interdisciplinary qualifications; affinity with photography and
film, visual methodologies; fluency in English and French (written
and spoken); ability to work both independently and as apart of a
team; coordinating skills.
We offer: The position of Postdoctoral researcher is temporary for
maximally four years.
Initially the employee will be contracted for one year. An
extension of three years is possible after positive evaluation of
capabilities and compatibility.
The maximum gross monthly salary is € 3.422,- for a full working
week in accordance with the collective salary agreement of the
Association of Dutch universities (CAO) and depending on
qualifications and experience. You will receive a holiday allowance
amounting to 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% of your yearly
income.
