Mit dem Reader "Ethnologische Feldforschung im Südburgenland. Ein hochschuldidaktisches Experiment" werden die Ergebnisse einer Lehrveranstaltungsreihe am Institut für Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie öffentlich zugänglich gemacht.
Ein Team von 30 Studierenden und 5 Lehrenden hat in den Jahren 1997 und 1998 eine verwaiste Privatsammlung geborgen, dokumentiert, mit ethnographischen Methoden kontextualisiert und vor den BürgerInnen der beforschten Gemeinde im Rahmen einer Ausstellung präsentiert.

Der Reader enthält 13 Beiträge auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen:
· Reflexionen über die Neugestaltung der empirischen Methodenausbildung der Studierenden;
· Überlegungen zur Musealisierung und Präsentation von Sammlungen;
· Ethnografische und sozialhistorische Beiträge zu Leben und Arbeit im multikulturellen Südburgenland.

Obwohl die Feldforschungs- und Auswertungsseminare bereits vor rund zehn Jahren stattgefunden haben, sind die einzelnen Artikel noch (Regionalstudien) oder wieder (erneute Studienplanreform, Musealisierungsdebatte) aktuell.

The reader "Ethnologische Feldforschung im Südburgenland. Ein hochschuldidaktisches Experiment" presents the results from a series of lectures at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology (University of Vienna) to a broader public. Between 1997 and 1998, a team of some 30 students and 5 lecturers rescued and documented an abandoned private collection, contextualized it by means of ethnographical methods and presented it to the local population within the scope of an exhibition.

The reader is comprised of 13 contributions addressing different aspects:
· Reflections on the restructuring of students' training in the field of empirical methodology;
· Considerations on the musealisation and presentation of collections;
· Ethnographic and socio-historical contributions investigating life and work in multi-cultural South-Burgenland;

While the seminars (field research and analysis) took place some ten years ago, the articles are still (regional studies) or again (new reform of study programs, debate on musealisation) very topical.

Vorsitzende des Österreichischen Verbands der KulturvermittlerInnen im Museums- und Ausstellungswesen 1997 bis 1999, Redaktion der Zeitschrift faxen 1999 bis 2002 und des Online-Journals Austrian Studies in Social Anthropology seit 2004.

Eva Kolm. MA in Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Vienna, curator for communication in museums and exhibitions, supervisor. Since 1993 freelance educational and cultural project work, since 1994 employed with Büro für Kulturvermittlung/now KulturKontakt Austria. Chairwoman of the Austrian Association of Cultural Mediators in Museums from 1997 to 1999, editor of the journal faxen from 1999 to 2002 and the online-journal Austrian Studies in Social Anthropology since 2004.

Gertraud Seiser. Seit 2000 wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut für Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie. Derzeitige Forschungsschwerpunkte: Ökonomische Anthropologie, Agrarpolitik der EU und Bauern. Aktuelles Forschungsprojekt: Österreichisches ländliches Erhebungsgebiet im Rahmen des EU-Projekts KASS (Kinship and Social Security).

Gertraud Seiser is a member of the scientific staff at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Vienna. She is conducting research on economic anthropology, for instance, on the impact of the European Community on economic concepts of peasants. Currently she is responsible for the Austrian rural field site in the EU-project KASS (Kinship and Social Security).
Her recent publications include 'On the Importance of Being the Last One: Inheritance and Marriage in an Austrian Peasant Community', in Peter Schweitzer (ed.) Maria Anna Six-Hohenbalken. Studierte Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie (Magisterium und Doktorat). Sie lehrt seit 1997 am Institut für Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie und ist seit 1999 Assistentin. Ihre Forschungs- und Lehrgebiete sind politische Anthropologie, Migrations-, Transnationalismus- und Diasporastudien, Ethnizitäts- und Identitätsforschung, Anthropologie Europas und Studien über Kurden und Roma.

Maria Anna Six-Hohenbalken has an MA and a Ph.D. in Social and Cultural Anthropology. Since 1999 she has been assistant professor and lecturer at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Vienna. Her research focuses include political anthropology, migration, diaspora studies and transnationalism, ethnicity and identity, anthropology of Europe, and studies of Kurdish and Roma communities.
