Abstract

Der Reader Intercultural Education enthält Beiträge des gleichnamigen internationalen Workshops, der im Rahmen der INST-Konferenz "Das Verbindende der Kulturen" von 7. bis 9. November 2003 im Austria Center Wien stattgefunden hat. 14 Autoren und Autorinnen aus unterschiedlichen Berufsfeldern wie Schule, Universität, NGOs, Ministerium, Erwachsenenbildung und unterschiedlichen wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen (Pädagogik, Philosophie, Politikwissenschaften und Sozialanthroplogie) haben ihre Erfahrungen und ihr Wissen im Workshop präsentiert und Artikel für den vorliegenden Reader verfasst. Sie kommen aus verschiedensten Ländern: Großbritannien, Italien, Österreich, Rumänien Tschechien, Türkei und USA.

English abstract

This reader contains papers presented in the workshop "Intercultural Education" at the INST-Conference "The Unifying Aspects of Cultures", November 7-9, 2003, Austria Center Vienna. The speakers have a background in the disciplines of education, social anthropology, political science, and philosophy and work as university professors and lecturers, as school teachers, as educational administrators, as parliamentary advisors, and in non-governmental organisations. They come from several different countries: Austria, the Czech Republic, Great Britain, Italy, Romania, Turkey, and the United States of America.

• The educational situation of ethnic minorities, of migrants and returned migrants, as well as of international students in different countries
• The situation of Roma children in schools in the Czech Republic and in Romania
• Intercultural learning in the Austrian school context, reaching from kindergarten to adult education
• Intercultural education in daily school practice, initiatives by individual teachers and the need to work on oneself as a teacher
• Lack of comparability of educational enrolment and achievement data between the different European countries

Susanne Binder. Dr. phil.

Ethnologin, ist Forschungsassistentin an der Kommission für Sozialanthropologie der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Sie hält Lehrveranstaltungen zum Thema "Interkulturelles Lernen" und "Flüchtlingsforschung" am Institut für Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie der Universität Wien. Jüngste Publikation: Interkulturelles Lernen aus ethnologischer Perspektive. Konzepte, Ansichten und Praxisbeispiele aus Österreich und den Niederlanden. LIT Verlag, Wien 2004.

Social anthropologist, is research associate in the Commission for Social Anthropology at the Austrian Academy of Science. She gives lectures on 'Intercultural Education' and 'Refugee Studies' at the Department for Social and Cultural Anthropology, Vienna University. Recent publication: Interkulturelles Lernen aus ethnologischer Perspektive. Konzepte, Ansichten und Praxisbeispiele aus Österreich und den Niederlanden. LIT Verlag, Wien 2004.

Mikael Luciak. Dr. phil.

Erziehungswissenschafter, Psychotherapeut. Derzeit Universitätsassistent am Institut für Bildungswissenschaft der Universität Wien. Studium und wissenschaftliche Tätigkeit an der Universität Wien, Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien, University of California, Berkeley und San Francisco State University. Bildungsexperte für die EU Beobachtungsstelle von Rassismus und Fremdenfeindlichkeit. Forschungsschwerpunkte: Interkulturelle Bildung, Bildungssituation ethnischer Minderheiten im internationalen Vergleich, Berufliche Rehabilitation und Inklusive Bildung.

Mikael Luciak is an educational scientist and psychotherapist and currently holds a position as assistent professor in the Department of Education at the University of Vienna, Austria. Dr. Luciak studied and conducted scientific activities at the University of Vienna and at the University of Economics in Vienna, Austria, at the University of California, Berkeley, and at San Francisco State University. He works as educational expert for the European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia. His research and teaching have an emphasis on intercultural education, on the schooling of ethnic minorities in comparative perspective, on vocational rehabilitation, and on inclusive education.
