In addition to inhuman physical conditions and denial of basic needs, such as food or access to adequate and clean sanitary facilities, the lack of sufficient health care and contact with the outside world are a frequent aspect of ill-treatment of detainees. These problems are often compounded by serious overcrowding of detention facilities around the world.
