Chile: General Bachelet allegedly tortured to death under Pinochet

last updated Aug 30, 2011

The Chilean judge Mario Carroza has announced an investigation into the death of General Alberto Bachelet. Relatives of the victims of the military rule of General Augusto Pinochet have brought in a complaint suggesting that Bachelet was tortured to death in prison in 1974.

Bachelet was a loyal supporter of former President Salvador Allende who was removed from his position in a military coup in 1973 and later committed suicide. After Pinochet had seized power, Bachelet was detained for treason and tortured by members of his own former air force. He died on 12 March 1974 in prison.

Judge Carroza has already investigated the death of Salvador Allende and the deaths and disappearance of hundreds of his supporters during the military reign of Pinochet.

Bachelet’s daughter Michelle became Chile’s first female president in 2006 and now serves as the head of the United Nation’s women’s agency. Both Bachelet’s wife and daughter were tortured in a secret jail before fleeing to Australia.
