Syria: Unrest causes dozens of victims in one day

last updated Nov 15, 2011

Violent clashes between Syrian soldiers and army defectors have caused more than 40 deaths in one day. A further 27 civilians were shot by security forces in the southern province in Deraa, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The severe restrictions on foreign journalists impede a verification of the exact numbers.

Meanwhile, King Abdullah of Jordan has become the first Arab leader calling upon Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down and make way for a political change and an end to the violent conflict. Syria has already been suspended from the Arab League and further sanctions were imposed on Syria by the European Union on Monday.

According to human rights organisations and most members of the Arab League, Syria has failed to comply with a peace plan foreseeing the withdrawal of all troops from urban areas and the release of all political prisoners. Around 240 people have been killed since Syria agreed to the peace plan on 2 November.

The United Nations estimates the number of causalities at least 3,500 since the beginning of the unrest in March.
