Austria: After six years, three policemen dismissed over torture case

last updated Apr 25, 2012

Three out of four policemen who were involved in torturing a Gambian detainee awaiting deportation in 2006, were dismissed from their duties after they remained in service for six years.

The four police officials were charged with a suspended prison sentence in 2009 but were allowed to remain in police service, causing heavy criticism by the media and civil society. The disciplinary commission of the Federal Chancellery, who deals with internal misconduct, first evaluated the case as a “minor offence”. After a decision of the Administrative Court and public pressure, in a new decision the disciplinary commission dismissed three of the police men with no entitlement of a pension. This also affects two of them who already resigned due to “psychological problems”.
