Iraq: Torture prison still in use even after reportedly shut down a year ago

last updated May 21, 2012

On Tuesday 15 May 2012, Human Rights Watch (HRW) stated in a press release that there is evidence that the Camp Honor prison facility in Baghdad is still in use, even though the Iraqi Government announced its closure in March 2011.

In an earlier report HRW found evidence of mass arrests, arbitrary detention and torture at the facility within Baghdad’s International Zone. Based on reports of witnesses, Justice Ministry officials, lawyers and a letter by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which documents the methods of torture used inside Camp Honor prison, it is very likely that the facility is still in use.

Therefore HRW request the Government to “appoint an independent judicial commission to investigate continuing allegations of torture and other ill-treatment, disappearances, and arbitrary detention in Camp Honor and elsewhere”.
