Switzerland accepts Uyghurs from Guantanamo

last updated Feb 03, 2010

Switzerland has agreed to take two ethnic Uyghur Chinese inmates from Guantanamo Bay, despite the parliamentary panel's recommendation not to accept the pair. According to the justice ministry, the two men, who will be resettled to the canton Jura, do not pose a security risk. China has demanded their return to face justice as they are accused of being terrorists but the US denied their repatriation due to the risk of mistreatment. Just recently, Switzerland had accepted an Uzbek detainee from Guantanamo as the first detainee to be hosted by the country.
