Studied geography (with a specialisation on
cartography) and ethnology at the University of Vienna (PhD 9/7/1979, doctor
thesis on "The Problem of International Symbol Standardisation in
Cartography" supervised by Erik Arnberger)
25/5/1998 Venia legendi (habilitation) at the University of Klagenfurt
for "Geography with special regard to regional geography and
cartography" after having submitted the research work "Contributions
to the geography of tourism of the northern Croatian coast".
Professional career
Started 1977 as a map editor of the Atlas of the
Danubian Countries under Josef Breu as the editor-in-chief;
since 1989 editor-in-chief of a new map series titled Atlas of Eastern
and Southeastern Europe
(link to publisher), geographical editor of
Oesterreichische Osthefte (till 2002), head, Geographical Department of the
Austrian Institute of East and Southeast European Studies (AIESEES); research
in tourism geography of the northern Croatian coast; publications, partly also
research projects on cultural, political, tourism, transportation and regional
geography of Central and Southeast Europe as well as on cartographic semiotics
and toponomastics;
1994-1998 project management and cartographic editing of the "Resources
and Environment. World Atlas"; co-operated in the Austrian Board on
Geographic Names (AKO), of which he became deputy chair in 2002;
member of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN),
since 2004 co-convenor of its Working Group on Exonyms; became in 1997 deputy
director of AIESEES; started teaching courses in geography at the universities of Klagenfurt (1996), Vienna
(2001), Rijeka
(2003) and Cluj-Napoca (2004); 2001-2005 director of AIESEES (2001-2002
together with Josef Vogl);
since 2007 at the Institute of Urban and Regional Research, Austrian Academy of
Sciences; 235 scientific publications and more than 200 presentations of
scientific papers in Austria and abroad.
