The Christian Doppler (CD) Laboratory for Molecular Recognition Materials was founded at the beginning of 2002 at the Department of Analytical Chemistry and Food Chemistry and is headed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Michael Lämmerhofer and Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Lindner. It is financed to 50% by the Austrian government (through the Christian-Doppler-Society), with the second half of its budget being provided by the involved companies. Industrial partners are the Swedish pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, the German chemical-pharmaceutical company Merck KGaA, the pharmaceutical company Fresenius Kabi Austria and the Austrian start-up company piCHEM, which is active in the area of peptide chemistry.

The CD-Laboratory for Molecular Recognition Materials (MRM) is committed to industry-related research on molecular recognition phenomena in particular in the field of separation science focusing on the development of new analysis and separation concepts for applications in life science, pharmaceutical research, biotechnology and natural product isolation. Our prime research activities are related to the design of novel dedicated and advanced materials for analytical purposes such as chromatography including stationary phases, sample preparation materials and derivatization reagents, but also for preparative purification implementing higher order molecular recognition phenomena and affinity-like selectivity principles for specific recognition of target molecules and separation of complex substance mixtures.
