Cultural History Information System
Maps are "graphic representations that facilitate a spatial understanding of things, concepts, conditions, processes, or events in the human world."
(Harley and Woodward, 1987, "Preface," in The History of Cartography, ed. J. B. Harley and David Woodward (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1987-), 1:xv-xxi, esp. xvi. )
Aim of the Cultural History Information System (CHIS) project is to design and build a collaborative spatially enabled system for archiving, analyzing and visualising datasets of cultural history. Through the interdisciplinarity of the various "The Cultural History of the Western Himalaya from the 8th Century" (CHWH) subprojects, providing datasets for the online application, more holistic views on the overall cultural history of a wide region in Asia (including Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and China) can be achieved.
Tributary to the construction of the CHIS, applied geographic and cartographic research is undertaken in various fields. This includes issues of cartographic communication, system design and evaluation, non-standard visualizations and GIS analyses of geographic data. Read more ...
