GOING PUBLIC
In this section we will keep you informed about current activities and publications.
In January 2011 we organised an international workshop in Vienna
on development discourse(s) in late colonialism. Keynote papers by
Françoise Dufour, Mamadou Fall, Bob Shenton, and Aram Ziai
were complemented by 18 scholars from three continents who explored
various aspects of colonial development in Africa. Photos from this
very successful event are available on Billy Frank's
flickr page.
The papers presented at the workshop form the basis of a volume
which will be edited by Joe Hodge, Martina Kopf and Gerald Hödl.
Under the heading "From Colonial Service to Development Work – Changing Structures and
Motives of European Foreign Assignments in Africa" we organised a panel at the
biennial conference of the
African Studies
Association in Germany (VAD) in Mainz, 7-11 April 2010, which included, among others, Hubertus Büschel and Lukas Zürcher.
In January 2010, the University of Vienna's "Forschungsnewsletter"
reported on our project.
Martina Kopf wrote an
opinion piece
on the continuities between colonial administrators and modern-day
development workers for the Austrian monthly
Südwind Magazin
(November 2009).
One of the most thoroughly researched
books on colonial development was
reviewed by Gerald Hödl for
Wiener Zeitschrift zur Geschichte der Neuzeit.
