Glasersfeld E. von (1985) Representation and deduction. In: Streefland L. (ed.) Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Psychology of Mathematics Education, Vol. 1. Utrecht, The Netherlands: State University. Fulltext at
Re-presentation, designating a re-play of conceptual structures, is contrasted with the popular idea of mental images of external things. The author claims that all deductive procedures require re-play of sensory-motor content as well as operational routines and demonstrates this in the classical syllogism and an example of simple addition. He concludes that the generation of deductive abilities in both logic and mathematics must be based on the practise of inductive inference.
