Short Bio
Hans-Herbert Kögler is Professor and Chair of the Department of Philosophy at the University of North Florida, Jacksonville. Dr. Phil. at the Goethe University of Frankfurt (advisor Jürgen Habermas); graduate studies at Northwestern, the New School, and Berkeley University. Major publications include The Power of Dialogue: Critical Hermeneutics after Gadamer and Foucault, (1996, 1999, German 1992); Michel Foucault (Second edition 2004), Kultura, kritika, dialog (Prague 2006), and the co-edited volume Empathy and Agency: The Problem of Understanding in the Human Sciences (2000). Social Epistemology (1997) dedicated a special issue to Kögler’s article Alienation as Epistemological Source: Reflexivity and Social Background after Mannheim and Bourdieu. Numerous journal articles and book chapters in English and German; translations into Czech, Russian, and French. He has been a guest professor at the University of Klagenfurt (Austria) and the Czech Academy of Social Sciences in Prague. Recent essays explore how hermeneutic and semiotic philosophy can be fruitfully applied the issues of epistemic and social constructivism, agency and autonomy, power, intercultural recognition, and the possibility of a cosmopolitan public sphere.
