Attached you will find a summary of 28 interviews with deaf students from 11 different countries.
The interviewed persons are students in the Netherlands, Belgium, China, Germany, Great Britain, Finland, France, Italy, Slovenia, Sweden and the USA.
Some of the students were interviewed in person while most of them answered the questions by email. The survey was conducted by Barbara Hager, former trainee at the project "Diversity Management" at the University of Vienna.
They were asked about their experiences at university in their countries in connection to the following subjects:
- the possibilities of using sign language interpreters
- the situation of getting notes
- the financial support
- the support in the organising of their studies
- the pro and cons of University studies
- the “Deaf student community”
As a result of the interviews this summary of different views gives an insight at the particular needs of deaf students and especially on their demands for a successful course of learning.
Countries like Germany, Sweden, USA and Finland are good examples for the favourable situation of deaf students, due to the fact that the official support in financial as well as in organisational way in deaf students live is significant.
Thanks to the interviewed deaf students, I got the chance to start the inquiry as a groundwork, on which the responsible team can compare the different situations of deaf students in various countries, to build-up better conditions for deaf students everywhere.
