„Stichproben. Vienna Journal of African Studies“ is a young journal dedicated to
Applied African Studies. It is published twice a year by the working group on
Applied African Studies, ECCo, based at the department of African Studies of the
University of Vienna, Austria.
The main
focus of the journal is on issues within the fields of contemporary history,
social history, politics, language and culture. Articles relate to Africa and
its diaspora, many of them being interdisciplinary in approach. Short reports on
workshops or conferences as well as book reviews and review essays occasionally complete
the
issues.
Stichproben is intended not only for
students and academic specialists but also for general readers and practitioners
with a concern for modern Africa.
The journal has the following main aims:

to be a forum for interdisciplinary and international exchange between
researchers in the field of African Studies

to reach a broader international as well as Austrian public with
well-written an up-to-date articles dedicated to contemporary African
Studies

to offer publishing space to younger researchers. Graduate or
post-graduate students who submit papers of high quality are given extra
support by the editorial team - to an extent not always common in
reviewed publications.

to increase the visibility of research in the field of African Studies
conducted in Vienna
