Since February 2013 the University of Vienna has been on Facebook, and the Alma Mater Rudolphina now regularly informs around 50,000 fans about its activities. In addition to Facebook, there are also regular updates on Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and also the University’s own blog. The social media channels were a key means of communication for the 650th Anniversary of the University of Vienna. Important events were announced via the respective social media channels and were accompanied by live updates and follow-up information for the community.
The Campus Festival had its own Facebook event created which quickly had more than 8,000 people registering for it on Facebook. The photos of the event that were posted on Facebook during the festival had a reach of more than 70,000 users. (=Unique Users).
For example, for the launch of the Anniversary celebrations on 12 March the two-minute clip "Happy Birthday Uni Wien" was posted online on YouTube. The video, which helps people identify with the University and involved the cooperation of many students and employees, has already been viewed more than 7,500 times.
With the #instawalk650 in July 2015, the University of Vienna also finally opened its doors virtually. In a guided walk through the Main Building of the University of Vienna, Instagram users with wide coverage shared photos online – including photos of rather unknown parts of the historically interesting building.
