  • Michael RUSE - "Why Does Gaia Give so Many Scientists the Creeps (and Why is it so Popular with the New Agers in California)?"
    February 27, 2010 - 11:15

    Abstract
I want to talk about James Lovelock's idea of Gaia, namely that the Earth should be considered an organism. I will start with the science and the developments and the criticisms. But as a philosopher and historian I want
to dig in a little and look at the whole metaphor of organicism, and ask why it is so disliked by today's scientists and why to the contrary the herbal sandal set just love it.
    Biographical note
Michael Ruse has been the  Lucyle T. Werkmeister Professor of Philosophy (since 2000) and the Director of the Program in the History and Philosophy of Science (since 2004) at Florida State University. He studied philosophy and
mathematics at the University of Bristol (BA, 1962) and McMaster University (MA, 1964), and obtained his PhD in philosophy from the University of Bristol in 1970. From 1965 to 2000 he was affiliated to the University of Guelph (History, Philosophy, and Zoology). One of the pioneers of the "new philosophy of biology," Dr. Ruse is the author or (co)editor of more than forty books and edited volumes, and of hundreds of papers and book reviews, most of which dealing with the history and philosophy of biology. He is currently preparing a book, "Gaia: Good Science or Bad Philosophy?," to be released by the University of Chicago Press in 2011.
