General information
The Science and Society Committee of FEBS (FEBS S&S Committee) organizes together with dialog<>gentechnik and media partners two round table discussions, themed “Re-emerging diseases – a global threat?” and “Stem cells in and for society”, respectively. These events are part of the new format “Science and Society in Public Places” which aims to bring together leading scientists, politicians, science policy makers, opinion leaders and media people to discuss hot topics. Both events take place in the beautiful city center of Vienna.
All FEBS2007 participants as well as the local community are invited. The event will be conducted in German language with simultaneous translation to English. Since there is only a limited number of places available, registration will be required.
“Re-emerging diseases – a global threat?”
The round table discussion “Re-emerging diseases – a global threat?” takes place Monday, July 9, 2007, 19:00, at the Natural History Museum. After the discussion, participants can enjoy snacks and a guided tour through the world-famous museum and enjoy the magnificent view of the Vienna city center from the roof of the Natural Histroy Museum. Discussion leader will be Birgit Dalheimer, a member of the Austrian broadcasting cooperation (ORF). The Austrian broadcasting cooperation is media partner for this event.

“Stem cells in and for society”
The round table discussion “Stem cells in and for society” addresses the societal implications of this promising, but controversial field of research. The event takes place Wednesday, July 11, 2007, 19:00, at the MUMOK (Museum Moderner Kunst). After the session beverages and a guided tour through the museum will be offered. The round table discussion will be hosted by Klaus Taschwer, a Journalist from the Austrian daily newspaper “Der Standard”.
