THE NAKO PRESERVATION PROJECT 2002

Nako Temple

A refined and complex artistic culture developed under Western Tibetan Buddhist patronage between the 10th and 13th century. Some of the most striking examples from this tradition are to be found in the seven temples of Nako Village, Upper Kinnaur (Himachal Pradesh, India: see the map). Previously almost unknown to scholars, a Tibetan form of Buddhism still flourishes in Nako today.

The monuments are now endangered due to the structural fragility of their architecture, and further threatened by rainwater and snowmelt infiltration. A major preservation programme is necessary, which will primarily involve large scale stabilisation work as well as cleaning and conservation of the unique wall- and ceiling paintings.
