GREAT Workshop on Comparative Modelling of Stellar Spectra |
Workshop Programme

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT
Vienna, Austria, August 23/24 2010.
The idea behind this workshop is to compare various modelling
approaches for cool stellar atmospheres by fitting the spectrum
of selected cool giants using the corresponding codes.
Groups of modellers around the world will participate in
a comparison of the various model codes by producing
a fit of a small sample (3-4) of given high resolution,
high S/N spectra and by deriving basic parameters like Teff,
log g, [Fe/H], etc from these data. The results shall be
compared and discussed at the workshop in Vienna in order
to identify differences between the codes and their impact
on the derived quantities. The summary of this discussion
shall be published in a paper.

In addition U. Jorgensen und T. Tsuji agreed to provide
model fits for our comparison. Almost ten individuals/groups
have declared their participation in our model comparison,
so we are very excited about the outcome of this workshop.
The workshop is organised by Ulrike Heiter and Thomas Lebzelter
and is financially supported by the ESF network initiative
GREAT (Gaia Research for European Astronomy Training)
and by the Robert F. Wing support fund at Ohio State University. It is supported by the IAU WG on Abundances in Red Giants.
The total number of participants is limited to 35. If you are interested in participating,
please fill out the application form below and send it by email to GREATgiants.astro@univie.ac.at.
Places will be assigned in the order of the arrival of the applications. Please allow for
approximately one week for the handling of your application.
VENUE
The workshop will take place at the Institute of Astronomy in Vienna.
The institute building (observatory of the University) is located in a
nice park in the 18th district of Vienna, Tuerkenschanzstrasse 17.
The workshop will be in the large lecture room on the first
floor - signs will guide you within the building.
The conference venue can be easily reached from the hotels listed
on the webpage www.univie.ac.at/galagb by public transport.
Further information will be provided later.
TENTATIVE SCHEDULE
Monday, August 23: 9:00 to 17:30
Tuesday, August 24: 9:00 to 16:00
We will have presentations from each modelling group, short reports on related
topics and lots of time for discussions. The "short reports" (5-10 minutes) should
introduce ongoing or future activities on the observational and on the modelling
side as well as on laboratory data, that may be of general interest for the
participants. You are invited to submit a title plus 2-3 explaining
sentences until JULY 20.
IMPORTANT DEADLINES
July 20 submission of "short reports"
July 31 submission of the results of the modelling experiment
FINANCIAL SUPPORT / ACCOMODATION
Those who asked for financial support (granted by the ESF and the Robert F. Wing Fund)
received already a letter confirming the grant. If you did not
receive it, please contact us asap. Funds will be paid upon receiving
a receipt of either your hotel bill or your plane/train ticket.
Please let us know in case you need support for booking a hotel room.
Where possible, we can pay the hotel directly for you (up to 3 nights).
LUNCH / DINNER
A free buffet lunch will be provided on Monday and Tuesday. On Monday
evening you are invited to join us for dinner in a Viennese restaurant.
Please contact us if you either do not want to participate in the dinner
or if you have special needs (vegetarian etc.) before end of July.
In case you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us: GREATgiants.astro@univie.ac.at
Looking forward to seeing you in Vienna,
Thomas Lebzelter & Ulrike Heiter
