Die Institution des Sororats kann (ähnlich wie die des Levirats) auf der Basis der Deszendenztheorie wie
auch auf der der Allianztheorie beschrieben und erklärt werden. Diese beiden
Ansätze sind miteinander nicht grundsätzlich unvereinbar. "Customs such as
the levirate and sororate are open to both explanations. In the sororate,
when a woman dies, then a younger sister is sent to replace her. To the
descent theory, these are clearly devices to preserve the continuity of the
lineage (Erhaltung der Linie); to alliance theory, they are ways of
perpetuation the alliance (Erhaltung der Allianz).
