Commentary

Images in Ulrich 1914 II: Taf. LXXIV.19 (photo), Crivelli 1973b: tav. 11.19 (drawing), Crivelli 1977: tav. 1 (drawing [erroneous ascription to grave 250] = Morandi 1999: 165, fig. 5).

The terra sigillata plate is one of the objects claimed by Domenico Pini to have been excavated by him in June/July 1901 at the Giubiasco necropolis, but may have been bought, or found at nearby Pianezzo (Tori et al. 2004: 27 f., 64 f., 69). The forged grave complex is described in Tori et al. 2004: 244. See also Ulrich 1914 I: 613.

The plate can be classified as type Dragendorff 31, datable to the second quarter of the 1st to second half of the 2nd c. AD (see Pernet et al. 2006: 203). It bears a heavily damaged stamp at the bottom of the bowl; though only initial ⟨Q⟩ and the remains of a filler of horizontal lines at the end can be made out, the stamp can be identified as that of the Padan potter Q. S() P() (OCK 1765), who was active in the second half of the 1st century AD, and three or probably four other vessels of whose manufacture were found at Giubiasco (see Pernet et al. 2006: 205–207).
