Commentary
- Volume II (= Part 3) of Conway et al. 1933
In volume II, under the heading "Kelto-Liguric", Whatmough presents the edition of the Lepontic inscriptions (together with the "Liguric" glosses); this edition is referred to even today, despite his lack of epigraphic knowledge. The editorial section is preceded by a historical overview of mentions in the ancient sources. Under the heading "Gallic", an edition of the inscriptions that are considered "Italian Gaul" even today is presented. The term "Kelto-Liguric" could correspond, according to Whatmough, also to the characteristics of the language of the inscriptions: a language which is celticised, but which conserves evident traces of its Ligurian provenance.
