Commentary

In addition to historical and archaeological problems regarding North Italy in both Roman and pre-Roman times, a linguistic discussion of some North Etruscan inscriptions and alphabets is given. The analysis of these texts is accompanied by an essay on the alphabetic problem, whose results are not too different from those of Mommsen 1853.
