Travel within Vienna

The Department is within easy walking distance of the centre of Vienna, and can be reached by the U-Bahn (underground/subway) line U2, by tram (lines 37, 38, 40, 41, 42) or by bus (line 40A). We recommend using public transportation rather than a car within Vienna.

One ticket is valid for all types of public transportation, either for a single journey or for a particular period of time, and tickets bought in advance (even if it's seconds before entering a tram) are cheaper. We recommend that you check your needs carefully to get the best deal. Previous experience has shown that either a 4-journey ticket is a good bet; you will only need a 72-hour ticket if you plan to enjoy the night life. Only the Heuriger at the end of the meeting requires public transportation (not the Mayor's reception).

Getting to the Linguistics Department

U-Bahn: Line U2, stop "Schottentor, Universität". Take the exit "Liechtensteinstrasse", not the exit "Universität", and you will emerge in Liechtensteinstrasse at the point shown on the map above.
Tram: Lines 37, 38, 40, 41 and 42, stop "Schwarzspanierstrasse". You will find yourself at the top of Berggasse (Berg="hill"), and have an easy walk down to the Department.
Bus: Line 40A, stop "Liechtensteinstrasse". The bus stops at the crossroads (with traffic lights) immediately outside the Department, and is therefore not specially marked on the map.
Car: follow the road signs to the centre of town ("Zentrum") until you reach the Ring (which has various prefixes such as "Kärntner-", "Burg-" etc.). This is one-way in a clockwise direction. Follow the Ring to "Währingerstrasse": turn left into "Währingerstrasse", then (immediately after the second set of traffic lights) right into "Türkenstrasse". (Beware: You cannot turn right from Währingerstrasse into Berggasse itself, and will finish up miles away.) In Türkenstrasse take the first turn left ("Wasagasse") then the first right into "Berggasse" and park immediately.
