VO Ausgewählte Kapitel aus Populationsgenetik |
| Reinhard Bürger |
| Mi 17.00-18.00 und Do 17.00-18.15 UZA 2, HS A310 |
| 2h |

VO Ausgewählte Kapitel aus der Math. Logik |
| Sy-David Friedman |
| TUE and THU 14:00-15:00 |
| |
| This course is based on joint work with Hyttinen and Kulikov. We discuss the descriptive set theory of the generalised Baire space kappa^kappa, kappa an uncountable regular cardinal, and introduce a notion of Borel reducibility for equivalence relations on this space. Then we apply this theory to study isomorphism relations on the uncountable models of a first-order theory. This work thereby relates two ways of classifying theories, one via Shelah's stability theory and the other via set theory. On the set theory side we'll use forcing and some elementary properties of Gödel's L; on the model theory side we'll need some of Shelah's "main gap" analysis, which will be treated in detail. |

| The theory of pseudodifferential operators emerged in the mid 1960-ies through the work of Kohn and Nirenberg and has earlier roots in Fourier analysis and singular integrals. It was subsequently refined by a number of mathematicians, most notably by Lars Hörmander, and turned into one of the most esstential tools in PDE. More precisely, it allows a flexible way of applying Fourier techniques to the study of variable-coefficient operators and singularities of distributions. By the latter we mean the wave front set, a refinement of the notion of singular support, in the sense that also the the "bad frequency directions'' of the distribution are taken into account---the study of which is called microlocal analysis.
Applications of pseudodifferential operators are multitude. The most prominent and classical is the propagation of the wave front set for solutions of partial differential equations. However, over the years, in particular pseudodifferential calculus has turned into a general method that has successfully been applied in diverse fields of analysis, recently also in time frequency analysis. |

Goals:
Introduction to a very active field of PDE research and to some of the modern methods. Both masters thesis and PhD thesis in the field are supervised by the team of the Wissenschaftskolleg "Differential equations".
Requirements :
The presentation is selfcontained based on ma-terial distributed to the students. Good know- ledge of functional analysis + basic knowledge of PDEs and numerical mathematics is helpful.
NLS are a fascinating class of partial differential equations, occurring in a variety of applications. They present extremely hard problems both for "pure mathematicians" and for "applied mathematicians". We show how involved it is to answer the elementary questions : Does a solution exist ? Is it unique ? Does it exist for large times ? Can I calculate solutions ? Can I trust the curves the computer produces ? We address both mathematicians, physicists, chemists, astronomers, ? and focus on basic problems and methods for analytical treatment of NLS and the connection of mathematical theory to physical modeling (with emphasis on Quantum dynamics). Starting from this combination we present and discuss methods of numerical simulations and present/discuss also simulations that show the wealth of complexity of solutions of NLS. |

| Content: Particular attention is being paid these days to the math.modelling of the social behaviour of individuals in a biological population, for different reasons; on one hand there is an intrinsic interest in population dynamics of herds, on the other hand agent based models are being used in complex optimizat. problems (ACO's, i.e. Ant Colony Optimizat.). Further decentralized/parallel computing is exploiting the capabilities of discretizat. of nonlinear reaction-diffusion systems by means of stochastic interacting particle systems.
Among other interesting features, these systems lead to selforganizat. phenomena, which exhibit interesting spatial patterns. As an example, here an interacting particle system modelling the social behaviour of ants is proposed, based on a system of stochastic differential equations, driven by social aggregating/repelling "forces". Specific reference to species observed in will be made. Extensions to models of chemotaxis, such as tumor driven angiogenesis will also be presented, in which the so called organizat. process is driven by an underlying biochemical field, strongly coupled with the spatial/geometric structure of the growing tumor. Current interest concerns how do properties on the macroscopic level depend on interactions at the microscopic level. Among the scopes of the seminar, a relevant one is to show how to bridge different scales at which biological processes evolve; in particular suitable "laws of large numbers" are shown to imply convergence of the evolution equations for empirical spatial distributions of interacting individuals to nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations for a so called mean field, as the total number of individuals becomes sufficiently large. We will see how by rather simple models based on stochastic differential equations we may gain remarkable insight in the behaviour of complex systems. |
