Therefore a broad insight into the wide spectrum is necessary for the students. During the first section of the curriculum the students learn a lot of the basic disciplines related to the nutritional sciences. Aim of the studies is to become a specialist for all questions concerning human nutrition. Therefore the graduates need a broad education, integrating all aspects of human nutrition and at the same time allowing them to implicate their knowledge within other disciplines. During the first part of the study basics of natural sciences are transferred, which is highly relevant for the comprehensiveness of the courses building the second part of the study. During the second part of the study a more expert orientated education in the several areas of nutrition and food sciences and a further deepening in the form of free eligible focuses are given. The studies are completed by a diploma thesis and a final examination. Lectureship studies (teacher education) The lectureship "household economy and nutrition" is to be studied obligatory in combination with a second subject. The studies are divided - as all other lectureship studies of the faculty of natural sciences - into two parts of 4 semesters each. The diploma thesis is written in the main subject. The lectureship entitles to teach the subject "household economy and nutrition" at secondary schools. Master thesis The diploma studies as well as the lectureship studies are completed by a diploma thesis. Within the scope of research projects of study related research institutions, a thesis is elaborated which should show the ability of autonomous scientific work. As topic for the thesis the students may choose within the whole spectrum of nutritional related subjects within the curriculum. In addition to three month of work experience the diploma thesis represents the most important job orientated part of the studies. Doctorate (PhD) As in all other studies of natural sciences a PhD closing with a Dr. rer. nat. in nutritional sciences is possible. The PhD studies take 4 semesters at least depending on the chosen research field. During the whole study and at least during the master and PhD thesis good skills in English as the language of science are a premise for a successful termination of the study and a good job. Nutritional scientists act notably on European and international level; good skills in foreign languages are therefore indispensable. |
