European Southern Observatory ESO
One of the main aims of Austrian astronomy and astrophysics is to join the European Southern Observatory (ESO). This would provide access to the most modern telescopes, strengthen Austrian astronomy, and guarantee the participation in international top research. It is also required for an optimal use of space telescopes. The development, construction and operation of these astronomical telescopes and instruments also provide economic opportunities for commercial companies.

Public Outreach and Documentation
ÖGA2 acts as a national contact point for
astronomical and astrophysical matters. It can arrange contacts between different institutions and astronomers and assist with non-regional initiatives.
-
Support of Young Astronomers and
Astrophysicists
A main objective of this ÖGA2 working group is to award a prize to the best master thesis and to increase the mobility among astronomers and astrophysicists. Astronomy is one of the most attractive natural sciences. Consequently, the group intends to increase the quality and quantity of teaching at high schools and to offer additional training to high school teachers.

Light Pollution
The increase of the night sky brightness due to manmade light pollution interferes with astronomical observations by professionals and amateurs. This problem having also cultural, economic and eccological aspects is treated by ÖGA2 in inter-disciplinary
collaboration.
