Photovoltaic activities in Austria

Research activities

Introduction
The main research work of our group carried out at the institute focuses on the identification of defects in semiconductors. The influence of crystal defects and impurities in the semiconductor matrix on its electrical properties is investigated. One application of this work is the improvement of photovoltaic solar cells made from lower purity or multicrystalline silicon. Recently a novel front contact grid for multicrystalline solar cells was patented which reduces the influence of the defects at grain boundaries on the solar cell efficiency. Recently thin layers of fine polycrystalline silicon deposited at low temperatures are investigated in order to develop a new type of thin film solar cell. Parts of the work are carried out in close collaboration with the Atominstitut der Österreichischen Universitäten and the Institut für Geophysik der Universität Wien.
