Teaching approach

My approach to academic teaching aims at spanning the range from concept-oriented, theory-driven lecture series to case studies that use selected organisms or ecosystems as heuristic models. I am particularly interested in combining ecological with evolutionary aspects in teaching. Apart from basic lecture series as required by the curriculum, I emphasize charismatic organisms that are useful to illustrate general biological principles – such as butterflies or ants. A special focus of my teaching lies in statistical methods for the critical evaluation of quantitative data – from the analysis of individual properties across populations to the multi-species community level.
