Stem cell commitment in myocardial tissue repair

Transfer of skeletal muscle myoblasts and transfer of BMC have been shown to promote the tissue repair after myocardial infarcts. There is, however, an ongoing debate about the efficacy of each of these therapeutic approaches. A significant part of the project will, therefore, focus on a comparison of the efficacy and optimal use of myoblast vs. BMC transfer.

A second aim of our research project is to evaluate the arrhythmogenic potential and the intracellular Ca 2+ handling of skeletal myoblast and BMC that have been transplanted into the myocardium. These experiments are performed on the single cell level (confocal microscopy, patch clamp and analysis of EC coupling in BMC and/or skeletal muscle myoblasts after grafting). Supported by FWF project 15527 .
