| a1 | You (must do) for me (this service?) as for a dear (father), with [your] whole self. In earlier times as well in this way (the monks) would do service to the Omniscient |
| a2 | ... therefore, o Ānanda, do not be unhappy and neither be sad. [61d] To all gods [and] humans someone could do service, |
| a3 | .... great merit here, [but] not from all creatures. For there will be here, o Ānanda, in time not [yet] come, ones having gone from the house, (who) in every way .... |
| a4 | ... [62d] .... In words and conversations by day [and] in sleep at night they will find pleasure. (But if), however, they get (into a fight) with each other over such verbal duelling .... |
| a5 | mutual enmity (will arise). Monkish thinking [and] feeling it will ruin [and] there will be disregard among one another. [63d] If, however, out of hate |
| a6 | they accuse each other much of misdemeanours and errors, if, however, mutual respect is being lost |
| a7 | ....[64d] .... if the Tathāgatas cause belief, (those) will begin (to drag) the best (into the dust? and cause [it] to be ridiculed (?)) |
| a8 | .... the law’s taste of butter [and] sesame (and) the bliss of rice[alms] |
| b1 | .... [65d] .... if, however, pupils appear, who have kept up [the moral conduct], prudent |
| b2 | .... [66d] (And) thereupon the Buddha spoke the three strophes of deep meaning: It has been proclaimed (by me) |
| b3 | .... he [is] the cutter of the arrow aimed at the [not] seeing. It is you that must act, these (Tathāgatas) are only the harbingers |
| b4 | ... [67d] (This) strophe he spoke (first). Proclaimed to you by me earlier is the way, the cutter of the arrow of thirst |
| b5 | .... the Tathāgatas, the omniscient ones, the wise ones. This strophe he spoke second, to strengthen these his pupils in [their] fervour. |
| b6 | [68d] .... (there is no other) for the catharsis of the mind. Those that have walked it, the thinkers, will drive away the clouding bondage of the Māra. This (strophe he spoke third). |
| b7 | .... Now this time of the law will follow. [69d] What I had to proclaim to you, or what had to be taught, all this I have proclaimed to you. |
| b8 | .... I have neither hidden anything, nor even have I veiled anything [and] I have never done a thing, which would (not) have been (accessible) to you. |
