Translation

a1Of those gifts I have already mentioned [that could serve] the purpose of going towards Maitreya, morality is the one foundation for the world.
a2Without it the world would not be able to hold the mountains, the trees [and] the human beings together. Without morality, which gifts would one give?
a3Who does these things, even if he is mean, he will see Maitreya, god of men and gods, [so] (I will teach )
a4them. How will somebody through his foolishness see him in a different manner than with these [things], if gods, kings, and men of property do not [even] see him
a5through their nobility? If only moral behaviour is there, [and] somebody lights even [just] one lamp out of love for me, Śāriputra, he will certainly see
a6Maitreya. Even who strews golden flowers over me every day, if (they are not virtuous),
b1by such (people) he (cannot) be seen. This one [Maitreya] could not be reached by force [or] by courage, nor through rites [or] magic, nor through personal determination [or] through royal dignity,
b2not even through the learning of the arts, nor through heroic strength. Through the good deed [and] through the donation (only)
b3one could go to Maitreya. With good chariots [and] the arms of morality
b4[well] equipped, with the allies of gift [and] wisdom, the people will come to Maitreya, (to the help and
b5protection) of the whole world, he will grant them the amṛta medicine, and they will go out of the saṃsāra prison. Thus the lord Buddha prescribed this at the incident of the question of Śariputra. In (six) ways
b6(the earth) trembled in the three thousand worlds, (c) through myriads, the Sumeru mountains collapsed and everything (trembled).
