a1[8d] The one having based body and mind on the breathing in and out ....
a2For they have achieved (the fourth Dhyāna). No-one breathes out, [9d] who has not achieved the fourth Dhyāna. The mind grows all listless(?). Turned towards the inside is his thinking and feeling
a3entirely, and his (whole) body is (?) in a trance. For such reasons there is no breathing out for these. [10d] To which place the body belongs, to the earth [also] belongs [its] breathing out. For the wind must be understood as naiṣyandika [“belonging to the discharge (of the body)”]. There is [also] the aupacayika [“coming from nourishment”], also the vipākaya [“originating in
a4the compensation for the deeds”]. But this does not come to the count in breathing out. [11d] Knowledge of this, this recognize as the creature of the root of salvation, for the consciousness has received the power in the section, because of this it is
a5called ānāpānasṃrti. This is the gate to immortality for the keen-minded. [12d] This [is] connected to the world as wished [“kāma”] and [the world] as shaped [“rūpa”]. The
a6world as wished must be looked after by it. If it [the ānāpānasṃrti] that has the five Bhūmis [“earths”] for support [and is connected] with the indifferent senses can be caused, then this one [the world as wished] should cause it [the ānāpānasṃrti] at all times. [13d] In a six-fold way is this
a7breathing in and out being taught: as counting [“gaṇanā”], as following [“anugama”], as investigating [“upalakṣanā”], as placement [“sthāna”], as modifying [“vivartanā”] [and] as purifying [“pariśuddhi”]. As having sixteen manifestations this meditation is taught. [14d] The counting, this is here
a8taught in five manifestations: [correct] counting [, this is] one, two, three, four, five to [and including] ten. Again [and again] he counts others as breathing out, always ten each. [15d] Counting less. however, [is] here:
b1Seven, eight or ten [times] he breathes out, but he calls [only] six, five or nine, [but] not the full amount. More counting furthermore [is] here: How often he breathes out, he counts [it] less than that as breathing
b2out. [16d]. Mixing [is this]: What he breathes out, he regards as breathing in, or [what] he breathes in, he counts [as] breathing out. Keeping pure [is this]: five [times] he breathes in [and] counts this as five, or
b3five times he breathes out [and] also counts this as five. [17d] Following the wind, furthermore, [is this]: when he breathes in through the nose [and] the wind enters him, he follows it. With consciousness and knowledge he follows the wind: into the throat,
b4into the navel, towards the heart down to [and including] the feet. [18d] [All the way] to the big toe he leads the consciousness, from there he sees the winds issuing from the big toe, half a sesame-seed or a [whole] sesame-seed in measure, [the length of] one
b5finger, one “instep/span” or one arm having come [out]. [19d] As far as his mind’s power [will allow], as far as his sensual organs, so far he sees. How then is, furthermore, the placement of the winds? [Answer:] The winds having entered by the nose
b6he places in the throat, in the heart, towards the navel or in the big toe. [20d] The winds having come upwards he places in the crest, until he sees all winds standing in the body,
b7as if locked in. Like unto a jewel being on a string he sees the body. In this way understand the placement of the winds. [21d] Investigation [is this]: The winds having entered by the nose, those he sees having come to the throat,
b8[having] come to the navel, to the (heart) unto the big toe. Then from such a one is ....

Philological commentary

This leaf, which, according to leaf number and content, belongs to the Smṛtivarga (XV), in strophes 9-22 contained in it deals with the ānāpānasmṛti, the meditation relating to breathing in and out. On this matter cf. Abhidh-k 6, p. 153ff. The metre is 14/11/11/11 syllables in the rhythm 7/7 and 7/4.

In b1 instead of 'five' one would expect 'seven', and 'less than that' should probably read 'more than that'.
