The Biocenter PhD program was created in 1993
with the aim of providing biology students from all over the world with
the possibility for training and research in the attractive scientific
environment of the Vienna Biocenter. Successful candidates are accepted
as PhD students initially for three years with the possibility of an extension
into the fourth year. The PhD degree will be obtained from the Life
Sciences Faculty of the Vienna University or the Medical University of Vienna.
Apart from practical training and work in the laboratory, the following activities
are intergral parts of the PhD program. Biocenter seminars: Leading scientists in the various fields represented at the Biocenter are invited to present and discuss their latest results and ideas in a series of weekly seminars. These seminars allow PhD students to be informed about the latest developments in different areas of modern biology and offer the unique opportunity for personal discussions with each seminar speaker. PhD students also have the possibility to invite up to 4 seminar speakers of their own choice (per year). Biocenter lecture series: A weekly 2-hour lecture is held by the different group leaders who present the basics as well as the latest discoveries in a field of their own expertise. The aim of these lectures is to provide further insight into several areas of modern biology. Literature club: Recent publications of general importance are discussed in several literature clubs. PhD committee: A committee of 3-4 group leaders (including the supervisor) is assigned to each PhD student. Once a year, each PhD student presents his/her research data to the Biocenter at one of the weekly internal "Monday seminars". On this occasion, the committee monitors the progress of each PhD student and provides advice on future directions and decisions. Workshop: Students are encouraged to organize their own scientific workshops with international participants. International conferences: All PhD students are invited to participate in the International IMP Spring Conference which takes place every other year. PhD students are encouraged to present their data at this meeting as well as at other international conferences throughout their PhD studies. Travel funds are available for the attendance of international meetings. Specific Training in focused Doctoral Programs: The focused Doctoral Programs Cell Signaling and RNA Biology offer a structured in depth training in their specific areas.
