Department of Theoretical Physics
University of Vienna

November 26 - 28, 2004

We cordially invite you to participate in the first "Vienna Central European Seminar on Particle Physics and Quantum Field Theory", which will take place at the Department of Theoretical Physics of the University of Vienna, Boltzmanngasse 5, A-1090 Vienna, from Friday Nov. 26 to Sunday Nov. 28, 2004.

This year, "Advances in Quantum Field Theory" has been chosen as subject and is centred on field theoretic aspects of string dualities. The lectures mainly focus on these aspects of string dualities. Further lectures regarding supersymmetric gauge theories, quantum gravity and noncommutative field theory will complement the program. We believe that the vast field of research concerning string dualities justifies special attention to their effects on field theory.

The lecturers invited for this year's seminar are

G. Arutyunov (Golm), J. de Boer (Amsterdam),
J. Ellis (CERN), W. Lerche (CERN), R. Loll (Utrecht),
J. Louis (Hamburg), H.-P. Nilles (Bonn), D. Olive (Swansea),
S. Pokorski (Warsaw) and J. Wess (Munich).

General information on the meeting:

The new seminar series "Vienna Central European Seminars on Particle Physics and Quantum Field Theory" was created after a period of 35 years of "Vienna Triangle Seminars" which unfortunately ended due to financial cuts. Following a Europe wide wave of support, a new type of annual seminars in Vienna was widely called for. These seminars should continue - possibly in a transformed way - the successes of the past.

We are very thankful for all the help we received for creating this new series of seminars and are especially happy to announce its financial support by

The Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Culture
The High Energy Physics Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences
The Erwin Schrödinger International Institute of Mathematical Physics.

A considerable number of junior scientists are expected to participate in this meeting, as we received special grants for them. Details on application procedures and the distribution of financial resources shall follow in the second announcement end of August.

We are trying to create a platform for junior scientists: Speakers are to be selected from among them, discussion rounds and poster sessions shall be held. It is our special intention that the innovative character of the meeting will push forward scientific contacts and collaborations.

Moreover, the "Vienna Central European Seminars on Particle Physics and Quantum Field Theory" should also become a unique forum for coordinating conferences, schools and graduate courses in the Central European region. Please see the new webpage for information on forthcoming activities in the Central European region.

We remain with sincere regards, yours

Helmuth Hüffel
